Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Resource Economics

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the programme restricted?

Yes, INRM is a numerus clausus (NC) study programme. This refers to a capacity limitation, i.e. a certain number of study places available for a subject. As applications received regularly exceed study places offered, a selection procedure has been put in place weighing in the final grade of the previous study (90%) as well as practical experiences (10%). As the latter is not mandatory, applicants are ranked depending on their final grade. Therefore, it is impossible to clarify in advance if you will receive a study place as it will depend on the final grade of the other students, who are also applying that year.

An explanation of the NCs can be found here. Older NCs can be found here. Please note that errors in the amount of applicants admitted have occurred in the previous years. As a rule of thumb approximatively 50 students per year are accepted. Furthermore, please remember that these tables are simply intended to guide you and give you an idea if you would have received a study place in the previous selection process.

Is knowledge in German required?

No, the official language of instruction of INRM is English. However, knowledge in German is recommended for day-to-day life in Berlin, as well as dealing with official and administrative tasks. Moreover, some electives offered outside of the programme (in different faculties or universities) may be taught in German. If you are coming from abroad, please also check for visa requirements (typically German A1). There are many language schools in Berlin. For affordable German courses ranging from A1 to C2, please check the Sprachenzentrum of HU Berlin.

How much are the fees?

When applying through Uni-Assist, a handling fee is charged for the preliminary check of your application. Further information can be found here. Information concerning the semester fee at HU Berlin can be found here.

Can I complete an internship as part of my curriculum?

Can I study abroad?

How can I apply for a DAAD scholarship?

Students who want to apply for a full DAAD scholarship programme apply directly at the DAAD. Contrary to DAAD scholarships for a limited stay (research grant) which includes the study placement at HU, degree seeking scholarships do not include a place to study.
