Phasing out coal in German power generation:
State of the art, challenges and perspectives of energy transition.

Zusammenfassung: The social and economic impacts of changing the status of mining in mining-dependent regions are of major concern in the current energy transition debates in Germany. The country has set itself ambitious targets when it comes to climate protection; compared to the levels of 1990, a 40%-reduction in overall carbon emissions is to be achieved by 2020, and emissions in the energy sector are set to undergo a decrease of 61-62% by 2030. The country has already put 13% of its lignite power stations in standby mode until 2023. However, it will miss its targets without an accelerated reduction in coal power generation. Therefore, in 2018, the Federal Government set up a stakeholder Commission to provide a venue for negotiating the key issues of a coal phase-out. The recommendations were launched by the end of January 2019. The presenter was co-Chair of the Commission and will present and discuss the findings of the commission from different perspectives.
